JB's Friday 5

22032024

Hello Friends,

What. A. Week. But now it’s Friday and this is what I have for you this week.

#1 – Cut Away

Did you ever read those picture books growing up where they show you what’s going on inside things? you know, cut away books. Regardless, prepare for a nice little nostalgia filled rabbit hole that I found myself tumbling down. Illustrator Stephen Biesty is just one of the masters of cut away illustrations. From bridges to boats, his illustrations have educated and entertained many kids, me included, for decades. And after a quick google I discovered that he is just one of many masters of the surprisingly technical art of cut away illustrations. I feel like I am also just scratching the surface here, and I am keen to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

#2 – 3D Stairs

What happens when you give a community of 3D artists the same brief and let them go wild? This regularly held competition gives 3D artists the same blank canvas, kind of like a colouring in competition, but on another level, and the results are out of this world. The imagination of some of these artists is astounding. Which one is your favourite?

#3 – Remarkable Rocks

Everyone likes a cool rock, it’s pretty much the basis of our entire economy if you think about it. And these are some pretty neat looking rocks.

#4 – The Oregon Trail

It’s the most successful educational game of all time and you can play it again right here. Oregon Trail comes from the era of floppy disks. It’s a game that didn’t just introduce a generation to dysentery, but also educated a generation about the migration of people from the Eastern United States to the West after 1800.

#5 – Running

Running sucks, but I am loving these running illustrations by Jack Fletcher. The warped angles and speed lines nicely capture the suck that is running in a beautifully playful style.

O.K.

That’s it.
